Alexandrou Inn, Arnea

This small and charming inn has just six rooms and has been sympathetically restored by two brothers from the area, Vassilis and Dimitris. Arnea is a delightful village, full of character, which was carefully rebuilt after suffering at the hands of the Turks two centuries ago - most of the properties date back to that time.

There are some fascinating examples of architecture in the village as well as a good range of tavernas and local shops, many of which specialise in weaving. The region is also great walking country - you may come across traditional pursuits such as bee-keeping en route, and we certainly recommend exploration of the wild and beautiful countryside of Northern Halkidiki on foot.

Vassilis and Dimitris have shown great respect for the history of this house, keeping very much to local architectural styles, while introducing some contemporary flourishes and modern home comforts. On entering the large, elegant reception area with its open fireplace, you get a real sense of the hotel’s style. This is also where delicious breakfasts are served, incorporating local, home-made preserves.

The accent is very much on simplicity and quality, and the two brothers, both of whom are keen cooks, are eager to use local produce whenever possible. The same goes for dinner, when delicious, regional specialities are offered, alongside an extensive wine list (on request, pay locally).

There is a further living room upstairs with a balcony, and a small courtyard outside filled with fragrant roses, pink camellias and gardenias. The interior is decorated with local antiques, an intriguing collection of lamps, and many other objects of interest. All rooms display the elaborate wooden carved ceilings for which the area is known, and you will find luxury cotton linen for that extra touch of comfort.

There is just one double room, one twin, and four triple rooms - all with en suite shower, direct-dial telephone, television, hairdryer, central heating for the cooler months, and soft, velvety duvets - yet another special touch from this very special hotel.
