Corsica's Hills & Coast

Rugged mountains & a glistening sea

Walking on CorsicaCorsica is a land of wild and rugged scenery, from its wooded mountainous heartland dotted with timeless stone villages, to craggy cliffs along the spectacular coastline, guarded by imposing Genoese stone watchtowers. This is magnificent walking country, enjoying a warm Mediterranean climate and offering the possibility of spotting a wide variety of flowers indigenous to the island, from Hottentot fig to Corsican hellebore. Discover, too, Corsican cooking, with delicious charcuterie, ewe’s and goat’s cheese, and a wide variety of the island’s abundant game.

Majestic landscapes, challenging yet rewarding walking routes, and fascinating visits to cultural and historic sites, are made all the more pleasurable by the friendly welcome in our comfortable family-run hotels. With the freedom of a hire car you can enjoy a variety of walks or cultural visits, stopping to enjoy a wayside meal as and when the mood takes you. From the mountainous heart of this intriguing island, you follow narrow winding roads that meander through the rugged terrain to the sea. You stay in quiet hotels (with pools) near three small traditional villages, Venaco, Evisa and Serriera, and can choose from a variety of walking options to get to know this fascinating island.

Pool at the Paesotel E CaselleStart: Your journey begins near the small town of Venaco, in the heart of the National Park of Corsica, at the Paesotel E Caselle.

Situated beside the river in a quiet isolated position, you stay at this beautiful stone hotel for three nights. (Dinner is included on the first night at each of the hotels leaving you free to choose for the other nights.)

Genoese bridgeDays 1-2: There are many places to visit during your stay here: a short drive will take you to the town of Corte, set against a spectacular backdrop of jagged granite mountains, whose narrow cobbled streets leading to the hilltop citadel invite exploration.

Alternatively, you can walk from nearby Vizzavona through shady forests, past gushing streams and along verdant mountain flanks.

View from Hotel l'Aitone Days 3-4:
On day three, you leave Venaco and drive through the ever-changing scenery to Calacuccia, an ideal place to stop for a traditional lunch of local charcuterie and cheese. Continuing through the dappled shade of Laricio pines, you reach the mountain village of Evisa, where you will warmly welcomed by the Ceccaldi family for two nights at the rustic, but comfortable Hotel l’Aïtone.

View from Hotel l'AitoneEvisa is the focal point for two long-distance walking routes, making this an ideal place for exploration on foot. Walking options include following the sentier du châtaignier (‘chestnut path’) to nearby waterfalls, one of many paths through the beautiful Aïtone Forest.

Days 5-6: Leaving Evisa, you drive out of the mountains through the spectacular Spelunca Gorge, stopping perhaps to visit the pretty village of Ota, before reaching the coast and your final hotel. The Stella Marina (where you stay two nights) is a 10-minute drive north of Porto and only a short stroll from a pebble beach.

Stella Marina BeachTake a boat trip from Porto to see dolphins and seals and, if you are lucky, ospreys, at the Scandola Nature Reserve - a unique habitat which is off limits to all walkers and can only be viewed from the sea. To the south of Porto, discover Les Calanches, red and orange wind-eroded cliffs that tower to 300m above the sea, and which will form an everlasting memory of your descent from high mountain to glittering sea

Reverse option:
This itinerary is based on arrival at Calvi airport in the north-west of the island. However, if you fly in to Bastia or Ajaccio, you can undertake this holiday in reverse driving along the coast to your first hotel in Serriera and finishing in Venaco.
