Italy - Piedmont & Valle d'Aosta
Bordered by Liguria and the Alps, Piedmont is a region steeped in the traditions of wine-making. Its most well-known wine, the full-bodied, velvety Barolo, is produced in the lush, gently rolling hills of the Langhe ('Strips of Land') to the south of the region, where medieval castles stand guard over the vineyards. Spring, when the vines burst into life, is a delight, while in September the vines hang heavy with grapes and villagers prepare for the harvest.
In the mountains themselves, the Valle d'Aosta is a walker's paradise, and home to Italy's first national park, the Gran Paradiso. Forest of larch and fir, wide alpine meadows, cliffs and ridges, and creaking blue glaciers all combine to create an area of outstanding natural beauty.
