Salzburg's Lake District

AtterseeSituated to the east of Salzburg, the Austrian Lake District is just perfect for exploring on two wheels. The grandeur of the imposing and majestic mountain scenery is reflected in the crystal-clear waters of the deep blue lakes and, as you cycle along the lakeside lanes and designated cycle paths, you can stop to explore the many welcoming villages.

This wonderful route takes in dramatic Alpine scenery, cycling past several of Austria’s most spectacular lakes (Sees), and staying in charming traditional hotels in quiet towns and idyllic villages. Wherever possible, our route follows designated cycle tracks so you can enjoy the peace and quiet of the countryside while marvelling at the truly outstanding views.

Starting point: See Hotel Huber (4*), Abersee. This is a charming and elegant hotel, as befits its 4-star status.

Day 1: After a short boat ride (included) across the narrows of Wolfgangsee to St Wolfgang (where you collect your bikes), you cycle up through a wide, scenic valley to the small town of Bad Ischl, former summer residence of the emperor, Franz Josef. You have a short ascent on leaving the town, before enjoying a leisurely ride back down towards the lake, passing through the pretty town of Strobl and returning to your hotel in Abersee. (23km)

Accommodation: See Hotel Huber, as above.

Day 2: Your day begins with a lakeside cycle to the beautiful village of St Gilgen - the birthplace of Mozart’s mother, Anna Pertl. After a visit to the small but fascinating Mozart museum, you continue to Mondsee and on to the town of the same name. (18km)

Accommodation: Hotel Krone (3*), Mondsee. A warm welcome awaits you at this hotel in the heart of historic Mondsee.

Day 3: Spend time exploring the town of Mondsee (the impressive cathedral is well worth a visit) or follow our enjoyable cycling route, taking in a complete circuit of Irrsee. This quiet lake is often overlooked by visitors and the views as you cycle back towards the mountains are stunning. (23km)

Accommodation: Hotel Krone, as above.

Day 4: Enjoy a superb lakeside route down Mondsee, admiring the dramatic scenery, which becomes even more breathtaking as you round the southern tip of Attersee, the largest lake in the area. (26km)

Accommodation: Hotel Föttinger (4*), Steinbach. This attractive hotel enjoys a peaceful location right by the water with commanding views up and down the lake. Take time to relax on the terrace or in the hotel's large garden. It was here that Gustav Mahler composed his Third Symphony.

Day 5: Today you follow a pleasant wooded route to Bad Ischl and on to St Agatha at the northern end of Hallstättersee. (30km)

Accommodation: Agathawirt (3*), St Agatha. The centuries-old Agathawirt is full of Austrian charm and carved wood furniture. The Schenner family offer a warm welcome and good, traditional cuisine. There is an attractive terrace and a small covered pool.

Day 6: The highlight of today’s route is a visit to the idyllic village of Hallstatt, the jewel of the region. The village and lake of the same name form part of the Unesco World Heritage Site and the cycle path around the east side of the lake enables you to appreciate fully the beauty of this spectacular region. From Hallstatt you return to St Agatha by boat (pay locally), reflecting on the stunning scenery of Austria’s Lake District. (17km)

Accommodation: Hotel Agathawirt, as above.
