Elegantly Swiss – in praise of the Bella Tola

Winter snow breaks in SwitzerlandRebecca Bruce, Inntravel’s Alpine and Scandinavian expert (left), has been to more mountain villages than she can remember. However, even she will admit that there is something very special about the Hotel Bella Tola in St-Luc, which lies in Switzerland’s quietly sublime Val d’Anniviers in the Valais region. Here she explains why…

“If I was to choose a phrase to sum up the unique charm of the Bella Tola it would be ‘relaxed elegance’. While this might appear to be a contradiction in terms, here it just seems to work – perfectly.

Everything is beautiful, and the attention to detail is superb, but it’s all done in a way that makes you feel completely comfortable. Indeed, I have rarely felt more at home than when sitting on the terrace, a cup of peppermint tea in one hand and a slice of tarte tatin in the other, contemplating a dip in the plunge pool after an enjoyable day on the slopes.

While the Valais is famous for busy resorts like Verbier and Zermatt (there are views of the Matterhorn in the far distance, too – see below), this tranquil corner feels delightfully out of the way. Traditional wooden chalets, burnt deep brown by the sun, cluster on the mountainside, and I just love exploring the crowd-free pistes (the red run down from just below Mount Bella Tola itself is my favourite) while taking in the sumptuous views.

The hotel’s owners, Claude and Anne-Françoise Buchs, are a real delight to work with, too, and have been friends of Inntravel for many years. Their generous spirit pervades the entire building, and they are extremely proud of its heritage. Having recently celebrated its 150th anniversary, the atmosphere they have created is certainly refined – with a nod to the days of the Grand Tour – but also very friendly and informal – a winning combination!

Le Grand Chalet Favre just bowled me over when I first saw it – simply beautiful. I loved the laid-back, chalet-style atmosphere (left), and I can imagine nowhere better to curl up with a good book than on one of their comfy sofas by the fire.”

If you’d like to spend a week in the charming village of St-Luc, you can choose between the elegant, 4-star Hotel Bella Tola, and the cosy new 3-star Hotel Le Grand Chalet Favre.
