Danish coastal sceneWe slept by a lagoon last night and are now wandering up the western coast of Denmark. We stop at one of several harbour towns and nose about, looking at the fishing boats. What is it about harbours and boats and water that attracts us all? We wind up for lunch at a small resort, where holiday-makers come but fishermen still carry on their timeless chores of dragging their boats down the beach at five in the morning and hauling them back up in the afternoon. Passing a Danish churchSuddenly Germany turns into Denmark. It’s amazing how a social landscape changes just because you cross an invisible line. Just as Holland has such a distinct identity, so does Denmark. We take the first back road we see, which leads us to a picturesque and unexpected scene. Read the full post

Dutch waymarkAfter several days of weaving our way up through France in a leisurely fashion, we enter Belgium. We are confused – we appear to be in Britain, passing through workaday high streets of nondescript buildings. Brussels, however, reveals some gems, including the Grand Place, where the ornate buildings which surround the square are so in keeping with each other that you feel that you are standing in the courtyard of a single immense palace.
