Austria voted the tops!

Austria in summerIf you’ve ever enjoyed a holiday in Austria - at any time of the year - it will probably come as no surprise that this staggeringly beautiful country has just been voted “Favourite European Country” by readers of the Guardian and Observer newspapers at this year’s Travel Awards.

From cross-country and downhill skiing in the Tyrolean Alps to cycling along the Danube and walking round the spectacular lakes of Salzkammergut, Austria has long been one of our favourite destinations, too.

Austria in winterNew for this winter, enjoy the snow in the tranquil and secluded valley of Pillerseetal amid the dramatic splendour of the Kitzbühler Alps, with a week at the family-run 4-star Hotel Kitspitz in the unspoiled village of St Jakob; while next summer, wander through the beautiful flower-filled meadows and mountain pastures of the Tyrol from our charming self-catering Tyrolean Farmhouse Apartments in Alpbach (details coming soon) - arguably the pretteist village in Austria.

Spend time in Austria and discover the idyllic Leutasch valley, traditional villages like Leogang and Hallstat, and the majestic calm of silent glaciers beneath the mighty Kitzsteinhorn, while staying in characterful hotels where the cuisine is exceptional and the hospitality world-renowned.

We simply love this wonderful country - but which is your favourite region of Austria?

I believe it's somewhere near Zell am See in Salzburgerland.

Where is the lovely photo above (with the couple and the lake behind) taken, please? Would love to walk there!

I'm always surprised how many people I know only associate Austria with ski-holidays. It's even better in the summer. Glad to see Inntravel have added Alpbach but it's a shame that Kleinwalsertal has disappeared. Can't pick a favourite place - anywhere in Tyrol and Salzkammergut, but Schladming is great too.
