Taste le Tour in the Delicious Dales

Stage One of the Grand Depart will take the riders on a glorious route through the Yorkshire Dales, beginning in Leeds and passing through such places as Otley, Skipton, Grassington, Hawes and Ripon – amongst others – before sprinting to a lung-busting finish in Harrogate city centre.

There are, of course, far more relaxing ways to follow the cyclists’ route – ways which don’t involve brightly coloured lycra, support vehicles and muscles pumping like steel.

Instead, you could spend a quiet day driving those same road – long after the Tour has departed for France – stopping of en route to savour the glorious Dales’ scenery, or more pertinently, to savour the region’s culinary highlights, as detailed by our friends at Yorkshire Food Finder.

In the small town of Grassington in Wharfedale, why not stop for lunch at the Grassington House Hotel where award-winning chef-patron John Rudden (left), creates mouth-watering dishes prepared entirely in-house using the best fresh Yorkshire produce?

Or, call in for refreshments at the cosy, 17th-century Punchbowl Inn near Reeth in Swaledale, a classically traditional Yorkshire pub, before continuing to visit the market in Leyburn or Ripon’s magnificent cathedral, perhaps.

There are many reasons why the organisers of the Tour de France chose the Classic Yorkshire Dales for Stage 1 of Le Grand Depart –and we encourage you to explore a few of them...
