More of a stroll than a March...

Place Fell, Lake District, UKI’m going to Shropshire in the morning to check the walking notes on our new short break, Castles of the Shropshire Marches, to make sure they are perfect for our first customers in April. I can’t wait as it’s an area I’ve not walked in before. I hope the weather is kind - it’s very windy here in Yorkshire but at least it’s dry and the sun is shining.

I was in the Lake District last Thursday (left) and the weather was glorious - not a breath of wind, blue skies and warm sunshine (yes, I did say ‘warm’.) You simply cannot beat walking in the UK when the weather is good. The landscapes are magnificent and so varied and that’s why I’m looking forward to walking in Shropshire as I know it will be different from the places I know well.

Ludlow Castle, ShropshireShropshire has had a very turbulent and exciting history, standing as it does on the borders, or Marches, between England and Wales. There are fortifications and strongholds from all ages - Bronze Age earthworks, Saxon hillforts and Norman Castles - standing sentinel above the rolling hills and winding river valleys. I have to confess I’m a bit of a castle ‘anorak’ so I know there will be plenty to keep me interested along the way. Apart from its castle (right), Ludlow, where the walk ends, is also a very gastronomic town, famed for its food festivals, excellent restaurants and specialist food shops - so another of my ‘hobbies’ will be well catered for, too!

I’d better check my camera is in order now, as I’ll no doubt be taking hundreds of photographs. The landscapes may not be at their best at this time of year but I’ll post some of my shots on this blog when I get back. Talking of which, we’re always looking for good photographs for our brochures and website so if you have any from any of our destinations, here or abroad, that you feel are suitable for our style of holiday and worthy of publication, email them to us and we’ll let you know…
