Rick's culinary odyssey continues...

Oxtail Stew in SpainIt was 'part two' on TV last night, as Rick Stein continues his camper van adventure round Spain, seeking those out of the way places and authentic cooks and traditional recipes that reminded him of his childhood holidays.

Last night, he travelled from the Basque Country and made his way to the Mediterranean on the coast of Catalonia. Not that it all appeals, mind you - I have to confess that I'm one of those squeamish Englishmen he alluded to who wouldn't set foot in a snail festival. The oxtail stew (left), however, is another matter...

I was fascinated to see how anchovy fillets were trimmed with scissors and neatly laid in tins by hand; how to get the best flavour from a large 'gambas' by sucking the juice out of its head; how a restaurant can operate perfectly well on commercial charcoal barbecues, and how to fry milk!

SeafoodRick also stopped off in La Rioja - well, you would, wouldn't you? - to sample a glass or two among the rolling hills and vineyards before wandering round the streets of Laredo and then Pamplona. Here, he met an ex-pat who had entered the city's famous bull run 50 times, only stopping after being tossed unceremoniously into the air and trampled by a sleek black bull. (Now wouldn't good old 'health & safety' love to get their hands on that festival?)

He finished in Catalonia last night, enjoying a wonderfully relaxed meal by the sea, with fellow chefs and friends, and I have to admit, I wish I'd been there.

This programme sums up what our holidays are all about - authentic encounters with local people, relaxed discovery of out of the way places - though we prefer to walk or cycle rather than go by camper van - and, of course, enjoying great regional food.

In fact, I wonder if Rick got his idea from our Gastronomic Trails in Catalonia holiday? Mmmm... now there's food for thought.

I ran with the bulls in Pamplona two weeks ago and would have loved to try Hotel La Perla cusine - especially the oxtail, or bulltail!! Now I'll have to return again next year - bring it on...
