Italy Unpacked, episode two – Looking to the Future

In the second programme of the latest ‘Italy Unpacked’ series, ‘Looking to the Future’, Italian chef Giorgio Locatelli (right) and British art historian Andrew Graham-Dixon leave Emilia Romagna behind and strike out for Lombardy, the industrial heart of Italy.  Watch it this Friday on BBC2 at 9.00pm.

Their first port of call is Giorgio's hometown Corgeno situated on the shores of picturesque Lake Comabbio, not far from its more well-known neighbours, Lake Orta and Lake Maggiore (below). Here, he invites Andrew to his home for a typical Sunday lunch with all the family.

For his part, Andrew takes Giorgio to see some unusual frescos in a small hidden chapel. Painted by Lorenzo Lotto, “Christ with long fingernails” is apparently one of Andrew’s favourites!

From Corgeno they head on to Milan, the capital of Lombardy, famed for its magnificent Duomo, world renowned La Scala opera house, exclusive shops, most notably in the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II – and a former hotbed of the Fascista! While Andrew delves into the cultural heritage of the city, Giorgio investigates chef Gualtiero Marchesi (acclaimed as the father of modern Italian cuisine) who was the first Italian chef to receive three Michelin stars – not that he is happy with them, far from it. He has openly criticised the star system asserting – allegedly – that no Italian chef needs ‘patronising’ by a French guide!

They move on to Mantua to marvel at the fabulous Palazzo Te, designed and covered in frescos by Giulio Romano; and thence to Cremona, home to that most famous of violin makers, Antonio Stradivari. But you’ll have to watch to find out more…
