Fefor for free - win a winter holiday !

Icicles, Fefor Hotel, NorwayA week tomorrow marks the centenary of the first man, or group of men, to reach the South Pole. This was, of course, Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen, who beat Scott by a good month.

A forlorn Scott and his exhausted team arrived on 18 January 1912 to find the Norwegian flag flying proudly. As he commented at the time, “It is a terrible disappointment. All the daydreams must go; it will be a wearisome return.” That proved to be one of the greatest understatements of all time.

Scott had prepared for his ordeal by training in the central Norwegian Highlands at Fefor, where he used the Fefor Hotel as his base (right). He loved Fefor and during a wistful moment on Antarctica’s Great Ross Ice Barrier, he commented to his companion, fellow adventurer, Tryggve Gran: “Wonderful Fefor. I liked that place better than any other place I have visited.”

Not many people will get the chance to walk to the South Pole – not many people would want to! – but you can experience the thrill of exploring the snow-covered wilderness of the Norwegian Highlands by dog sled (below) or on skis, staying at the same hotel that Scott used.

Not only that, but you could even experience all this for free! All you have to do is answer a simple question correctly: click here for details.
