Hotel Urthaler, Südtirol Dolomites

Opened in 2003, the Hotel Urthaler is very stylish - and very unique. Built entirely from natural, untreated wood - the first hotel of its kind in the Alps - it is completely in harmony with its surroundings, and the delicate scent of wood pervades every room. It is a place where you can really indulge yourself with the finer things in life, and the emphasis is squarely on relaxation.

What we say:

The service: Having worked with Walter and Nina Urthaler for a considerable number of years - their original hotel, the Plaza, features on our popular High Dolomites walk - we were not surprised by the fact that almost all our customers highlight the attentive service and warm hospitality as one of the best aspects of the hotel. All too often at 4-star hotels the service can be professional yet distant, but this is not the case at the Urthaler because it is very much a family business.

The food: Just as no detail has been overlooked in the design of the hotel - the fittings and furniture of the spacious, wood-panelled bedrooms are made entirely of natural materials such as stone, wood, glass and wool and are free from allergens - a great deal of thought has been devoted to the refined cuisine. Savour a delicious fusion of Italian and Austrian cuisine, with dishes such as lamb with polenta. The local Trentino wines make the perfect accompaniment.

The facilities: Even for a 4-star hotel, the facilities here are truly excellent. The spa, in particular, is outstanding - with its panoramic heated indoor/outdoor pool, Finnish sauna, steam room, whirlpool, Turkish bath, relaxation room, massage facilities, beauty treatments, meditation classes and gymnasium, you could easily indulge in hours of pampering during your stay. Other facilities include a cellar bar, atmospheric stube and cocktail bar.

The location: The hotel's location is worthy of note for two reasons. Firstly, the views to the jagged, lace-like peaks of the Dolomites are superb. Secondly, being situated right on the Seiseralm plateau (1,850 metres), the largest high mountain plateau in Europe, the cross-country and downhill skiing, winter walking and other activities are all on the doorstep.
