Beautiful Lake Lucerne lies glistening amid a protective ring of spectacular, snow-capped mountains in the heart of the Swiss Alps. The pretty villages that line the shores are served by the many steamers that have long carried passengers across these blue waters, providing vital communication and linking them with the elegant city of Lucerne that sits at the head of one of the lake's many inlets.
The walking around Engelberg was a real thrill - fantastic views of the mountains in all directions - and easy footpaths to follow.
After exploring historic Lucerne or taking a trip across this beautiful lake, you travel right into the heart of the mountains, where high-altitude walks are accessible to all thanks to cable cars. The landscapes here are surprisingly varied and, in late June and throughout July, the flowers are simply spectacular, while September is a favourite time for walkers.
