pretty Alpujarran villages
ascend Spain's highest peak
Europe’s second highest mountain range, the Sierra Nevada, towers majestically over Spain’s southern coastal plains. Its rugged, snow-capped peaks give way to a series of steep-sided, terraced river valleys, which run southwards towards the Mediterranean. Small glacial lakes dot the high mountain pastures whilst the myriad fast-flowing streams, fed by the melting snow, have carved out a landscape of deep river gorges below.
Trevélez and Capileira are, respectively, the first and second highest villages in Spain, located at an altitude above that of the peak of Ben Nevis. Overall, this is the highest-level walk in our programme, higher even than our routes in the Alps.
Robert Lockwood, Sales Team
Pretty, flat-roofed villages cling to the valley sides, a relic from the North African Berbers who made the most lasting impact on these landscapes. Exquisitely constructed canals still carry the snow melt to the lower fertile slopes of the Alpujarras, while abandoned threshing floors, ancient terraces and old stone farmhouses are etched into the steep hillsides. Our thrilling walking route leads you far above these farmlands, with challenging ascents to alpine pastures way beyond the tree-line, a world of grazing ibex and bright gentians, only accessible in summer months. Your holiday takes place entirely in the National and Natural Parks of the Sierra Nevada and links three pretty Alpujarran villages.
