Extend your stay
If you are flying via historic Sofia, add on a city break for a real contrast to your walking holiday.
  • self-guided, two-centre walk
  • spectacular mountain scenery
  • welcoming family-run hotels
  • cultural diversity

Southern Bulgaria is a land of contrasts and surprises, where towering majestic peaks stand sentinel above medieval monasteries and traditional villages are still influenced by the bygone communist era. Situated between Sofia to the north and the Greek border to the south, the two Alpine chains of the Rila and Pirin mountains are a delight to explore. Here, the food and culture is heavily influenced by neighbouring Greece and Turkey; history and heritage is deeply entwined with the Byzantine and Ottoman civilisations.
The slopes are coated with dense forests populated by bears and wolves, while the granite peaks sport a sparkly dusting of snow.

The villages of the Rila and Pirin Mountains offer great bases from which to explore some truly dramatic landscapes. With reminders of their communist past ever-present in the towns and villages you are driven through, to walk into the surrounding mountains is a chance to see the many changing faces of Bulgaria. As you enjoy challenging walks through flower-filled meadows, shady pine forests and past glacial lakes, there is a sense of discovery, and the welcome you receive from your hosts will give you a real feel for this country and its traditions.
