Green and unspoiled, Asturias is dominated by the magnificent Picos de Europa – craggy limestone mountains which shelter rare birds and animals and conceal startling blue lakes, lush valleys, tiny villages of red-roofed houses, and deep gorges. Just a stone’s throw away is the equally rugged Atlantic Coast, where picturesque fishing villages nestle in sheltered bays and the pristine beaches are blissfully quiet for most of the year.If you can, come here in early summer – the flowers, including many species of orchid, are superb. I love the tranquillity, too – often you can walk all day without seeing another soul.
