One of Italy’s last remaining ‘undiscovered’ regions, Basilicata – or Lucania, as it is also poetically known – is also very much Italy’s deep south, with a slower rhythm to daily life. It may be little-visited, but the wealth of sights and places of interest is astonishing.
I have fond memories of swimming in the pool before breakfast, enjoying the peace and the views across the wheat fields to the hills beyond, accompanied by graceful swallows swooping and diving over the water. Idyllic!
Kay D’Souza, Regional Manager for Italy
Settled by the Greeks, the Byzantines and the Normans, its history is rich and fascinating, with numerous archaeological sites and ancient towns that testify to this colourful past. Just as intriguing are the contrasts in the scenery, which ranges from Dolomite-like mountain peaks to wide-open expanses of pastureland, golden with the wheat grown for local bread and pasta. Your base from which to discover all this for yourselves is L’Orto, a wonderful agriturismo where a warm and enthusiastic welcome awaits you from Fulvio and Cinzia Spada.
