About Mallorca >Mallorca is distinctly Mediterranean in character, both in its ways of life and its landscapes. What is most astonishing is the variety of scenery on such a relatively small island. At its heart lies a gently rolling plain whose almond groves provide a beautiful display of blossom each spring. This is bordered to the south and east by the hills which frame the island’s rugged, lesser-known coastline, while to the north rises the Tramuntana Sierra, whose craggy limestone peaks plunge into the sea. Aleppo pines, holm oaks, olives, carob and orange trees predominate, the latter bearing their main crop in January. The island’s gastronomy is excellent, the sea providing a range of fish – one of the most popular of which is sea-bass, sometimes baked in rock-salt – and seafood. Savour dishes such as caldereta de sambfaina, a lobster casserole; sopa mallorquina, made with bread, garlic and leeks; the ratatouille-style tumbet; and llom amb col – pork and pine nuts wrapped in cabbage leaves.

Wander down the narrow, winding streets of Palma and you will be pleasantly surprised and delighted by what you find. This is a vibrant city with modernist architecture and pretty squares at every turn, and is dominated by the striking cathedral overlooking the colourful marina. From the heart of the city, a delightful historic railway heads north through the mountains to the charming mountain village of Sóller.

The dramatic scenery of the coast, where mighty mountains rush down to meet the sea, epitomises this island of contrasts on a break of visual delights.

Mallorca’s most dramatic scenery – and one of its prettiest villages – is to be found in the Tramuntana Sierra in the north-west of the island. These rugged mountains provide a spectacular backdrop to clusters of honey-coloured houses which sit amid immaculate terraces of orange and lemon trees stretching as far as the eye can see. Your base is charming Sóller, a bustling place nestling in a fertile, bowl-shaped valley surrounded by 1,000-metre peaks.
