This little-known region is a closely guarded secret that Madrileños tend to keep to themselves. It is a land of handsome medieval villages, fairy-tale castles, dramatic caves and canyons, and glorious scenery.

I led Madrileño while the children ride to the sound of the occasional ding of a cowbell and the call of a cuckoo. Something close to real peace floods through me.
