To the south of Salzburg, the Kitzbühler Alps in the Tyrol have long attracted alpine and cross-country skiers alike to some of Austria’s finest domains. Yet here, right in the heart of this region, close to the border with Salzburgerland, lies the tranquil and secluded valley of Pillerseetal, comprising five small hamlets framed by forested slopes and high peaks.
While the vast majority of the villages in our programme are on the quiet side of the mountain, this one is more so than any other. You’ve got the domains of Waidring and Fieberbrunn at either end of the valley, and then St Jakob in the centre of the valley, far enough away to escape the bustle, yet close enough for easy access. I loved the special atmosphere of the Kitzspitz, and you’ve got everything on your doorstep: the downhill slopes are just behind the hotel, while the cross-country and walking trails pass right in front of it.

One of these five pretty villages is St Jakob. It feels a long way from the hustle and bustle of nearby Kitzbühel and, as well as being the sunniest village in the Tyrol, can certainly claim to be on the ‘quiet side of the mountain’.
