The velvety wines of La Rioja compete with the best in the world. In the broad Ebro Valley, sheltered by the rugged Cantabria Sierra to the north, the vines, stretching as far as the eye can see, thrive in the warm Mediterranean-like climate. Pretty villages, the golden sandstone of their houses glowing in the sunlight, hide among the vineyards, combining with the greens and reds of the vines to create a tapestry of rich colours. Further south, the landscape changes, giving way to a patchwork of golden wheat fields and majestic monasteries.
Once again, the wine list is superb and affordable, which brings me to the underlying irony of cycling in La Rioja: one can return from the holiday both healthier and heavier!

The Observer
Our highly-praised route takes you through the very heart of La Rioja. Beginning in the picture-perfect walled town of Laguardia beneath the crenellated ridge of the Cantabria Sierra, you pass medieval villages and grand churches, before crossing the Ebro and following the old pilgrims’ route, with sweeping views in all directions. You stay in converted noblemen’s houses, a coaching inn and even a converted monastery!
