Though their landscapes are quite different, Sicily and Sardinia both boast a rich and colourful history, having been ruled over by the Carthaginians, Romans and Spanish, among many others. As you explore Sardinia’s golden dunes, rocky mountains and glorious woodland, you encounter Neolithic burial chambers, Phoenician ruins and watchtowers built by the island’s ancient nuraghi civilisation. In Sicily, imposing Mount Etna forms a splendid background to the east’s equally magnificent Baroque towns, while the exotic-feeling western part of the island boasts Doric temples, medieval towns, Roman monuments and Saracen watchtowers among its cultural treasures.
