Iceland

Iceland

• land of fire and ice
• comfortable hotels and guesthouses
• walking holidays and short winter breaks

With its vast glaciers, Iceland certainly lives up to its name, though its climate is much milder than is commonly perceived. This is a land where every drive, every walk is an adventure. Not only is the scenery on a grand scale, but you never quite know what to expect around the next corner, and the knowledge that these volcanic landscapes are continually evolving only serves to make them all the more awe-inspiring and humbling. Head to the south to marvel at Europe’s largest glacier, Vatnajökull, and the spectacular scenery that lies beneath it, or choose the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in the west, which encapsulates all that is Iceland: black-sand beaches, volcanoes topped with ice, thundering waterfalls, weird and wonderful rock formations… The capital, Reykjavík, is fascinating too, and in winter makes a great base for a Northern Lights break.
