On our doorstep...

Walking holidays in the UKOne of the best ways of seeing a place ‘as the locals see it’ is to time your holiday to coincide with a local fiesta, carnival or other celebration – colourful bustling streets, happy smiling faces, good food and drink, and great music and dance.

Not that you necessarily have to travel far – you may be pleasantly surprised at what’s happening in your area.

Here in North Yorkshire, we’re lucky to have a fabulous two-week music festival taking place in the immediate vicinity, as the celebrated Ryedale Festival prepares to welcome performers from all over the world.

To whet your appetite, this year’s illustrious line-up includes soprano Kate Royal (UK), violinists Magdalena Filipczak (Poland) and Andrej Bielew (Ukraine); trumpeter Tine Thing Helseth (Norway); and pianist Alessandro Taverna (Italy).

Walking holidays in the UKRecitals and concerts will be taking place over two weeks between 13 and 29 July 2012 at a number of historic venues in the Ryedale area, giving you the added bonus of experiencing world class music in some of Yorkshire’s finest buildings, including Ampleforth Abbey, Duncombe Park, Sledmere House, Pickering Castle, Hovingham Hall and our close neighbour, Castle Howard - as well as several of the area's historic churches.

See the full line-up and book your tickets for the Ryedale Festival for a unique chance to combine world culture and Yorkshire heritage at one of many venues.

Why not combine a concert with a rewarding walk? All venues are readily accessible by taxi (and some by Festival Bus) from both hotels which feature in our Taste of the North York Moors short walking holiday.

This year, the North York Moors National Park is celebrating its 60th anniversary and so it's the perfect time to visit. Walk through lush wooded valleys to enjoy a leisurely lunch in the picturesque villages of Hutton-le-Hole, Lastingham or Levisham; and take an unforgettable steam train ride into the heart of the National Park to walk back over unenclosed heather moorland to the historic market town of Pickering.
