A garden of delights

The terrace at l'Orto, Basilicata, ItalyKay D’Souza, Inntravel’s Regional Manager for Italy recalls a recent visit to our self-catering apartments at L’Orto amid the largely undiscovered landscapes of Basilicata in southern Italy.

“We arrived at dusk, the Indian figs mysteriously silhouetted along the track … there was hardly any moon as we were ushered into our apartments. Once settled in, we joined our hosts, Cinzia and Fulvio for dinner - just as our customers will on their first night. There was a blazing fire in the hearth of this welcoming restaurant, converted from former stalls, but the welcome was even warmer.

The wheat fields of BasilicataThe table was piled high with antipasti in abundance, all from vegetables grown and then bottled on the farm; loaves of the famous golden Matera bread, made from the wheat that will be undulating gently in the surrounding fields; several kinds of home-made pasta; tasty involtini (stuffed meat rolls) and then Fulvio’s delicious experimental cake… of chocolate, almonds and amaretto!

We awoke to silence except for the birds chirruping and the hum of a tractor starting up for the day’s work. What could be more idyllic? We had a leisurely breakfast… bread, croissants, home-made jams, rich coffee … and more of that cake! Our customers here will be able to breakfast on their own terrace or choose to be served in the restaurant if they want to at €7pp. For those adding on a few nights here to their Puglia Journey - and most have done so - breakfast and dinner are included each night.”

Discover Italy’s deep south from L'Orto in Basilicata, where a slower rhythm of daily life encourages relaxation and leisurely exploration. We shall also be offering special 3-night half-board break here to celebrate New Year’s Eve, with a gastronomic dinner included.
