Walking holidays in FranceDeep in the heart of south-west France, a small, unassuming village perches on a high cliff 100m above a wide meander of the River Lot. This is Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, a masterpiece of medieval architecture, dominated by a fortified church which overlooks a jumble of brown-tiled houses separated by narrow winding alleys. Artists and writers have long been drawn to this picturesque spot and its popularity amongst French visitors has just been acknowledged.

During the first Battle of Ypres in the First World War, among the many casualties was a British Officer, who was shot down by enemy fire and thrown on a heap of corpses ready for interring in a mass grave. As the burial party began their grisly task, the officer in charge noticed this particular body twitch and groan. Lucky for him - and lucky for us, as this man was Lawrence Johnson who went on to create the magnificent gardens at Hidcote Manor in the Cotswolds. Read the full post
