A true 'Winter Wonderland'

St Jakob, AustriaWhat a wonderful winter’s day here in the UK – cold and frosty, yet blue skies and sunshine (conditions may vary according to where you are reading this from!). But if you think it’s nice here, you ought to see what it’s like in the Alps at the moment – simply breathtaking.

Not only is the sun shining but there’s lots of that white stuff around making this the perfect time for a winter break in the snow, whether you prefer the quiet valleys of Austria and Switzerland or the high plateau of central Norway.

St Jakob, AustriaWe’ve just received these pictures from our friends at the Hotel Kitzspitz in the small village of St Jakob – and doesn’t it make you wish you were there? The snow is crisp and deep, yet the tracks open and clear with views stretching away into the pristine white distance. [There are plenty more pictures to look at.]

Hidden deep in the quiet Pillerseetal valley in the Kitzbühler Alps south of Salzburg, St Jakob is a great place for skiing, winter walking or just somewhere to enjoy these fantastic views from the warmth and comfort of the Hotel Kitzspitz, a truly charming family-run, chalet-style hotel.

Since New Year, heavy snow has been falling throughout the Alps and conditions are very similar in Switzerland, too. We may be biased, but we think the Parkhotel Quellenhof in Leukerbad has one of the best locations of any hotel in the Alps, sitting, as it does, high above the Rhône Valley and framed by a backdrop of jagged snow-capped mountains. Best of all, you could even enjoy these views from one of the village’s outdoor thermal spas!
