Join in the olive harvest in Las Alpujarras

Olive harvest, Las Aplujarras, SpainOn the south-facing slopes of the Sierra Nevada in southern Spain, the almond-coated hills of Las Alpujarras are ablaze with blossom at this time of year as the olive harvest reaches its height and the almond trees burst into flower beneath clear blue skies.

At the charming Casa Las Chimeneas in the unspoiled village of Mairena, Inntravel guests are currently enjoying some fantastic winter sunshine as they relax into local life on a rural finca, and help with the harvest by bashing the olive trees to collect the ripe fruit (both photos were taken by David yesterday, 6 February) and picking juicy oranges from the orchard to accompany their picnics.

Almond blossom, Las Alpujarras, Spain David and Emma Ilsley, who run Las Chimeneas, operate a working farm and are delighted if their guests want to take part in the yearly farming cycle - activities depending on the time of year - as well as including fascinating trips to a local olive oil mill and wine producers. Not only that, but we recommend several walking routes into the surrounding countryside and an unmissable opportunity to visit the Alhambra in Granada.

We’re also pleased to say that this holiday is now available as a short break so that you can experience the slow pace of rural life in the Alpujarras, a very traditional corner of Spain, in just a few days. Read Emma's inspiring blog >

An excellent choice! Since rural life in small breaks can be a shot of relaxing and enjoying simple & real life! We must SLOW DOWN our life rhythms! And usually these rural destinations can provide good places eat and sleep! Like the Greek mainland where I come from! Yours
