Alison: What led you to settle in Alicante, Brian? It’s not exactly the first place that springs to mind when you are thinking about setting up walking holidays in Europe. Surely, there are much more obvious areas - like the Pyrenees, the Picos de Europa or the Apennines in Italy.

My preferred means of transport in France is always by bike (see my recent post about the
Tour de France). But, while the French love of cycling has been well documented, they are also very fond of motoring – just witness the elaborate ‘pique-niques’ enjoyed by the French roadside each summer, testimony to how every car journey can be turned into an adventure.
