Searching for the real Jemima

self-guided walking holidays in SwitzerlandI’ve been doing a lot of research over the past few weeks tracing the life and times of Jemima Morrell, the young woman from Yorkshire who was one of the pioneering tourists who accompanied Thomas Cook on his first conducted tour of Switzerland in 1863.

I found out about her family life in Selby, her parents and siblings, and followed their descendants down to the present day.

In fact, only this week I discovered where she is buried – alongside her husband in the village his family came from, East Morton near Bingley.

The end of the story? Well, not quite…

To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the tour, Switzerland Tourism has arranged a special trip in June that will follow in Jemima’s footsteps, visiting the some of the same villages and enjoying some of the same walks she undertook.

There’ll be journalists going, of course; a blogger or two; a couple of competition winners; and even one of Jemima’s great, great nephews.

The only person missing is Jemima. Or is she?

self-guided walking holidays in SwitzerlandSwitzerland Tourism is looking for a ‘modern-day Jemima’ to go on the trip. She has to be able to undertake a few walks, have a connection with Yorkshire (surely you can trawl something up from your family’s past!) and be able to emulate the original Jemima by diarising the journey through tweets and posts. Fancy it? There’s no harm in applying for this trip to Switzerland… but you have to be quick, as applications need to be in by 20 April.

We’re helping in the search, but it’s Switzerland Tourism’s trip and their choice of who’ll be ‘Jemima’ – so no, I won’t be able to influence their decision!
