Winter snow breaks in NorwayTrine Møller, manager of the Sollia Gjestegård on Norway's North Cape got in touch the other day to tell us that in northern Norway they've just had the best summer in ages: "it was strange to have 20 degrees in September," she remarked, adding "Don't get me wrong – we liked it, but finally the snows came a couple of weeks ago, and we have now taken out the dog-sleds and are ready to start the season..." Winter snow breaks in EuropeI came across the first snows of winter last weekend while walking over the Forest of Bowland in Lancashire. Looking towards the Yorkshire Dales, I noticed that there was even more snow on the Whernside and Ingleborough. It was little more than a dusting where I was, but it did make me start to wonder what it’s going to be like in the mountains of the Alps or Scandinavia this winter? Need some inspiration?

Snow bike LaplandSometimes you just know when your normal mode of transport just won’t do. Glancing at this bike beneath the eaves outside the guesthouse, it dawned on me pretty quickly that I was going to need some other way of getting around. Northern LightsIf you’ve ever been lucky enough to witness the Northern Lights, you’ll know what an incredible sight they are – multi-coloured, ghost-like apparitions streaking and flashing across the night sky.

NASA scientists have been studying the effect for years and predict that 2012 will be the best display of the aurora borealis for 50 years.

Holidays in the snowIt’s the 38th annual Ski Show at London Olympia this week - 20-24 October - and there’s certainly no better place to go to get in the mood for a holiday in the snow. With 36,000 visitors expected, it’s going to be noisy and busy - but there’s so much to see, so many exciting things to try your hand at and countless suggestions on where to go this forthcoming winter.
